Pearl Cleage Takes a stand with Mad at Miles in Triad Stage’s UpStage Cabaret, February 12 – March 7, 2009

Black womanist decries sexism, racism, domestic violence and the tolerance of an abusive, yet talented artist

(Greensboro, NC, January 28, 2009) — Triad Stage presents Pearl Cleage’s explorative essay on the complexity of relationships between black women and men – Mad at Miles. This UpStage Cabaret production follows three women on an emotional journey through the anger of abuse to the clarity of self discovery. Even as they grapple with the discordant realities of relationships, sex and violence, they learn to find peace in the melody of their own voices. Set against the backdrop of Miles Davis and Cicely Tyson’s troubled marriage, these alternately passionate and poetic stories explore love, pain and where to draw the line between a man and his music. Mad at Miles opens on February 12 and runs through March 7, 2009. Mad at Miles is not recommended for younger audiences.

Triad Stage’s production is directed by Donna Baldwin-Bradby and features Tennille Foust, Jamila Curry and TaNisha Shavonne Fordham.

The creative team includes: music director Stephanie D. Gray, scenic and props designer Odori Miyako Hines, costume designer Jeremye N. Totten, lighting designer Nicholas Hussong and sound designer Philip Taylor. The stage manager is Emily Mails

Author Pearl Cleage has written several plays including Flyin’ West, which received commercial acclaim and critical praise, becoming the most produced new play in the country in 1994. Cleage is also a best selling author whose first novel, What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, was an Oprah Book Club pick and spent nine weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. She recently published her sixth novel, Seen It All and Done the Rest.
