Cyrus Art ProductionThe Traveling AncestorUsing dance, text, video, and song The Traveling Ancestor is a three-part cabaret performance that delves into some of the ways that people of African descent have moved, migrated, or mobilized throughout American history. This work is inspired by the poetry of Louis Mustafa Audrey and is choreographed and directed by Duane Cyrus. The viewer is invited to journey to the early 1800s onboard the fictional slave ship Empire as it leaves a trail of silent, waterlogged victims in its wake. The next stop is by train to the 1930s Chicago dressing room of an aging chanteuse who reveals her motivation for fleeing the the South for what she thought was a better life up North. The final destination is by foot to Greensboro, NC in the 1960s where students of African descent help to mobilize a nation through marching and even sitting still in civil protest. The Traveling Ancestor is a performance work inspired by the poems of Louis Mustafa Audrey. It is about the location of black people in the Diaspora—the myriad journeys and manifestations of black people throughout history. It is the shifting location of black culture, the elusive concept of "other" in a white hegemony. In a larger sense, the work speaks to the journey we are all on—regardless of color. It calls to the audience to witness some of the diverse perspectives and influences that African Americans have had on Western culture. The Traveling Ancestor is multidisciplinary and video projection will play a large part in creating the mood and feeling of “time travel” for each of the sections. Each performer will play several roles in the work––transforming into a different figure for each section.May 3, 4 and 5 |
